The Maui Prep College Counseling Center provides individualized support beginning in the freshman year to meet each student’s unique college goals. Each year, Maui Prep students will complete a series of activities designed to prepare them for the college admissions process. Successful completion at each grade level results students earning a certificate, or “paddle,” signifying their progress as they paddle forward to college.
Freshman Year: Preparing for the World of Adults
- Participate in a life skills course
- Create SCOIR account to search for careers and colleges
- Create a digital portfolio using Cirkled In
- Prep for college admissions tests, and take PSAT 8/9
- Create an initial college list
- Practice interview and résumé-writing skills

Sophomore Year: Learning about College Options
- Participate in a College and Career Explorations course
- Complete career interest inventories
- Refine college list
- Update Cirkled In digital portfolio
- Continue college admissions test prep and take PSAT/ NMSQT
- Create and present a personalized college plan to parents
- Gain familiarity with actual college/university applications
- Attend college fairs and meet with college admission representatives
- Draft college essay
- Begin a “passion project” that extends beyond the curriculum
Junior Year: Putting your Best Foot Forward. What’s the best path to paddle down?
- Complete two semesterJunior Seminar Course, focused on college planning
- Continue admissions test prep and take PSAT/ NMSQT (fall) and SAT (spring)
- Update and present personalized college plan
- Meet and develop relationships with admissions representatives
- Create or update draft of college essay
- Continue or begin second “passion project, including interviews with professionals and/or internship
- Attend mandatory college planning meetings with parents and college counselor
- Visit college campuses
Senior Year: Following Your Charted Course
- Complete two semester Senior Seminar Course
- Prepare and take SAT/ACT
- Revise and polish college essay; write supplemental essays
- Finalize college application and apply to colleges by early November
- Continue or complete third “passion project”
- Collaborate with professionals or participate in an internship as part of Senior Capstone Project
- Apply for scholarships and/or financial aid
