Did you know the original Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 is one of the most successful video game-to-movie adaptations of all time? It broke even in its opening weekend and had more than tripled its budget by the end of its theatrical run.
Now there’s a new attempt to bring the gory fighting game to celluloid life, complete with an R-rating and a pledge to recreate the video game’s brutal “Fatalities” for moviegoing audiences. This trailer does not keep it clean, but it does give us a first taste of the ensemble cast — including action-packed appearances from Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero — and the journey they’re about to embark upon.
Mortal Kombat comes to theaters and HBO Max on April 16.
